Alpen 116 8×21 Monocular Review

Alpen, the popular name in the field of sports optics, established in 1997, is the manufacturer of this Alpen Sport 116  8 x 21 Compact Monocular.  Its objective is to provide superior quality optical products at affordable prices. The instruments are built to endure the toughest of conditions and to provide great viewing in a compact size. A monocular is used to magnify the images of distant objects with the help of a series of lenses and prisms.  It is half the weight of a binocular with the same properties. The difference is that the monocular produces a 2 dimensional image while the binocular produces a 3 dimensional one.

This model is very sleek and light weighted.  It weighs only 70.8 grams so that it is very comfortable to carry during your travel and thus it doesn’t need a tripod. It is constructed with smaller prisms and objective lenses to reduce the weight.  It comes in a stylish grey colour.

Aperture - The aperture of the objective lens measures 21 mm in diameter. An aperture is a hole or an opening through which light travels. It performs the light gathering function from the object and helps in producing a fine and bright image of the object.

Eye Relief – The eye relief is said to be 10mm which is suitable even for the spectacle wearers, to get the entire field of view clearly and comfortably.

Exit Pupil – The exit pupil is situated at the centre of the objective lens which measures 2.6 mm.  The size and shape of the exit pupil is very essential for the performance of the monocular. It determines the amount of light that is required for enhancing the quality and brightness of the image.
