A monocular is used to magnify the images of distant objects with the help of a series of lenses and prisms. It is half the weight of a binocular with the same properties. The difference is that the monocular produces a 2 dimensional image while the binocular produces a 3 dimensional one.

Alpen 116 8 x 21 Outdoor Monocular is designed with a roof type of prism that helps to fold the optical path and makes the instrument much shorter which results in the light weight of the monocular. This model does not have a water or fog protection.
